Rain! And progress on the painting – Day 153

It’s raining! The grass and gardens and my head are appreciative. My migraine is finally completely gone and things are starting to look green again. Our rain barrels are full and we actually bought another one today. We want to try to use the rain barrels to water our gardens this summer rather than using the water from the hose. It appears it may be dry so we want to conserve as much as we can.

I just have one area left to deal with on the split rail fence. I finished the grass around the flowers this morning so I only have the trees above the top rail to deal with now. This painting is almost done!

Painting and photos for possible future paintings – Day 152

This morning I was back at the split rail fence. Sometimes I wonder if I’m doing too much….working on individual strands of grass really…..but then I back up and take a look from a distance and I see the difference. And really, that’s the important thing! It’s my goal to have it completed in the next few days but that will depend on the weekend schedule. It’s looking like rain so we may end up spending it inside rather than in the garden which may mean more painting time.

I brought home my work camera today (a Canon Rebel) and took some pics in our backyard. I continue to be fascinated by nature…the colours, the shapes and the light. I need to be taking more photos as they may become paintings in the future.

This is the only poppy in my garden, a beautiful pink one. The petals remind me of crepe paper.

These flowers almost seem to glow. They’re a perennial and I can’t remember what they’re called. They remind me of little carnations.

These are in our beautiful huge planters.

Peonies ready to bloom.

And Boo found some catnip which has made him very, very happy!

Checking out other techniques – Day 151

I did my usual morning painting and I’m hoping to complete the split rail fence by the end of the week. Yay!

Although the migraine fog has lifted from my head, I’m still dealing with the pain. I made it through the day at work and in fact worked late to get a bunch of things done. This evening I decided to relax by browsing through You Tube for some different painting techniques.

I found this time lapse video of Amy Shackleton’s painting. She doesn’t use a brush at all, just uses gravity to move the paint around the canvas. She does beautiful work!

Migraine – Perspectives on a Headache – Day 150

Well, today I ended up at home again, unable to shake this migraine. I spent a few hours at work but then couldn’t handle the pain and nausea anymore so I came home. We were supposed to have thunderstorms today (bringing the much needed rain) but they didn’t materialize. I checked the weather radar and the huge band of storms coming from the west split up and went north and south of us. Therefore, no rain for our gardens. Sigh.

The air has cooled down quite a bit though and this has allowed the fog in my head to clear. I still have some pain but I don’t feel quite as ‘out of it’ as I have the past couple of days.

Many people think of migraines are just a headache but let me tell you, that’s not true. Yes, a headache is part of it, but I’m also sensitive to light and sound and feel nauseous. Overall, it’s a full body attack that really sucks!

I’ve been on a new drug, an anti-depressant, for the past six weeks. In that time I have noticed an improvement as I’ve only had two migraines and they’ve both been weather related. This is a big difference from the two to three migraines I was getting each week!

My migraines often come with an ‘aura’ which is a visual disturbance. You know when you look into the sun and you get those spots in front of your eyes? It’s something like that. I get the spots, they spread and then everything is disjointed and I can’t see clearly for half an hour or so. Once the aura clears, the migraine pain hits so I know now to take pain drugs as soon as I start seeing the spots. The earlier I get them into me the better chance I have of reducing the severity of the migraine. The last few times my migraines have come without the aura though which is a little disconcerting. I’m really not sure if this is better or worse!

I got in a bit of painting this morning on the split rail fence but it was a struggle. Out of curiousity this afternoon I Googled “painting with migraine” and found this neat slideshow from the New York Times. Oliver Sacks wrote a book called “Migraine” in 1970 and featured a number of paintings representing what people saw when they had a migraine aura. (Photos in the slideshow are courtesy of the British Migraine Association).

20120529-203624.jpg

In viewing the paintings you’ll notice that in most the geometric patterns appear on the left side….that’s my experience as well. The migraine pain is often centered over my left eye as well.

It’s strange and fascinating that the medical profession knows so little about migraines, what causes them, and how to treat them. I imagine centuries ago those who had migraines with the aura were considered insane and underwent all kinds of strange treatments.

I’m hoping that as I move forward with this new drug that my migraines will become less frequent!

Waiting for the rain – Day 149

A huge clap of thunder woke me up early this morning and unfortunately it came with a migraine. It’s been hot and humid today and we’re expecting more thunderstorms overnight. I’m hoping that will help clear my head!

It’s been very dry here and we desperately need the rain. I know our garden will certainly appreciate it! We invested in a second rain barrel on the weekend so we can cut down on our water consumption this summer, it will be nice to use them.

I worked a little of the drawing of the trilliums in the woods on a 24″ x 36″ canvas. I find drawing is much easier to do than painting when I’m feeling under the weather. It’s going to be a beautiful painting…I’m not sure if it will detailed like the split rail fence or whether I’m going to go for a looser feel.

I did spend a little time online this evening getting caught up on the news and I found these really crazy offices. I could see myself working well in a couple of them but some I found a little over the top!

Some good news! on Day 148

Today I spent considerable time on the split rail fence. It wasn’t a block of time….I painted for a while and then did a household chore, then got back to it. I got a lot accomplished in short bursts – all the purple flowers are done! I still have to deal with the background grass around them in the middle but that shouldn’t take too long (famous last words).

I also heard back from Sandy MacKenzie Goguen, the instructor of the ‘Painting with a Palette Knife” course that was cancelled for June 2. She teaches the course out of her studio in Oshawa so I’ve arranged to learn this technique next Sunday, June 3rd. I’m very excited to learn something new! I need to pull out a couple of landscape photos that I want to paint and get some supplies. Oshawa is only 40 minutes away so it isn’t that far. The course runs from 10am – 4pm and hopefully I’ll be able to complete two paintings in that time.

Here’s a photo of the split rail fence….it’s moving along!

Another canvas ready for painting – Day 147

The little 12″ x 12″ canvas is ready for paint! I completed the drawing this afternoon. It’s a fall scene with beautiful red, orange and yellow leaves contrasting with the dark greens of the pines….all reflected in the water.

I took the reference photo in Port Sydney, Ontario in a little cove is just down from the bottom of the falls. This has been a favourite place of mine for as long as I can remember. Port Sydney is a very small village – the entrance sign says “Port Sydney – Home of 500 nice people and one old grouch”. Needless to say there has been a lot of speculation over the years on who the grouch is!

We moved around a lot when I was growing up and Port Sydney was the first place I lived. We moved when I was 5 but we always ended up back there to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins. During every visit I always made the time to visit the falls and just enjoy it’s beauty. Later, when I was married and had kids of my own we ended up living back in Port Sydney and it was always the place I went to gather my thoughts.

My father, Bruce Stonehouse, has painted the falls and surrounding area over the years as well – you can check out his paintings on our website at www.stonehouseart-design.com

Colour, colour, colour Day 146!

Tonight I came home from work and John had been working out in the yard. I painted this morning but it was the colours I could see from the deck this evening that impressed me.

Here are some pics:

Disappointment on Day 145

Today I received a call from The Lindsay Gallery about the class I signed up for on June 2 – Painting with a Palette Knife with Sandy MacKenzie Goguen. Unfortunately, the call was to say the class was cancelled due to a lack of registration. Turns out that I was the only one who registered!

I was so disappointed! I was looking forward to learning a new technique in a new medium (this was acrylic rather than oil) and I had planned a trip to the art supply store this weekend to get the right supplies for the class. It’s a good thing I didn’t make the trip!

I did send an email to the instructor to see if she teaches this course in another town or provides personal instruction. I really want to pursue this opportunity.

I will share a very positive, and cute, moment of my day when I caught our cat Boo sitting in the forget-me-nots. It gave me a much-needed smile!

Riding the Big Bike with Wally’s Wheels – Day 144

I was up extra early this morning to work on the split rail fence and I’m much happier with the progress I’m making. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

Tonight I rode the Big Bike for Heart and Stroke with the Wally’s Wheels team. Wally and I have been friends since I moved to the area 15 years ago and we talk to each other nearly every day. We’ve worked together on a number of projects and we co-chair the local Canada Day celebrations.

Wally had bypass surgery 10 years ago and since then has spearheaded Wally’s Wheels to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation by riding the Big Bike. I’m a fairly new member to the team (I’ve been on it for 3 or 4 years….I’m horrible with dates) and we have consistently been the team with the highest donation amounts. This year we raised $8,319!

The Big Bike is just that….a really big bike that holds 29 people and the driver. We all wore our Wally’s Wheels t-shirts – this year’s was purple and pink – and we pump the music, work the noisemakers, and ride the Big Bike through downtown! It’s always a good time.

I’m so proud to be part of this team!

Here’s Wally in this year’s shirt in front of the Big Bike:
